7 Autumn Riding Safety Tips

Cooler mornings, shorter days, and changing road conditions make autumn a great time to ride—but they also bring additional hazards.

  1. Watch for fallen leaves. Wet leaves can be as slippery as ice, especially in corners and under braking.
  2. Check your tire pressure. Cooler temperatures can lower tire pressure, so check it before every ride.
  3. Give your tires time to warm up. Cold tires provide less grip, particularly during the first few miles.
  4. Be alert for frost. Bridges, shaded roads, and low-lying areas can freeze before the rest of the roadway.
  5. Dress for changing conditions. Layer your gear and carry an extra layer for sudden temperature drops.
  6. Improve your visibility. Shorter days and low sun angles can make riders harder to see. Wear reflective gear and make sure your lights are working.
  7. Check your coolant. Make sure your cooling system is properly filled and protected for the colder temperatures ahead.
