Top 5 Must Haves for a Great Track Day
There's a certain kind of anticipation that hits the night before a track day. You've booked the session, got your bike ready to go, and mentally walked every corner a dozen times. But between that excitement and actually turning a clean lap lies a checklist that most riders learn the hard way, usually at the worst possible moment, and usually far from home.
Whether you're a seasoned club racer or finally making your first laps, what you bring to the track matters just as much as how you ride it. The right gear keeps you protected when things go sideways. The right prep keeps your bike on the track instead of in the pits.
Here are 5 things you need to make your track day more enjoyable.
-
Don't forget your gear: Helmet (full-face, track-rated), leather suit (one or two-piece), leather track-specific gloves, motorcycle boots, and back protector/spine armor.
-
Basic tool kit & torque wrench - Bikes vibrate hard on track. Bring a kit with the key fastener sizes for your bike, plus a torque wrench to check critical bolts (axle, brake caliper, bodywork) between sessions.
-
Glycol-free coolant - Most tracks ban glycol-based coolant because it creates dangerously slippery spills. Swap to distilled water or a glycol-free coolant (like Pure Performance or Ice Water) beforehand, or have it done at the track. Failure to comply can get you sent home.*
-
Duct tape & foam earplugs - Duct tape is used to tape over mirrors, lights, and turn signals (usually required by track organizers) to prevent glass scatter in a crash. Earplugs reduce fatigue from wind noise over a long day at speed.
-
Hydration, sunscreen & snacks - Physical and mental fatigue are real safety hazards on track. Bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, and sunscreen. Riding in a hot suit all day is exhausting — staying fueled and hydrated keeps your reactions sharp and your judgment sound.
