Preseason Powersports Checklist: Get Ready to Ride and Race

Before the first ride or gate drop of the season, a little prep goes a long way. This preseason checklist will help make sure your powersports vehicle is safe, reliable, and ready to perform when it counts.

Engine & Fluids

  • Change engine oil and replace the oil filter

  • Check coolant level and condition, top off or flush with a high-performance coolant like Engine Ice

  • Inspect fuel lines for cracks or leaks

  • Drain old fuel and refill with fresh fuel if the vehicle sat for an extended period

  • Check air filter, clean or replace as needed

Cooling System

  • Inspect radiator for damage, bent fins, or debris

  • Check hoses and clamps for leaks or wear

  • Verify fan operation (if equipped)

  • Make sure overflow tank levels are correct

Electrical & Controls

  • Test battery and charge or replace if needed

  • Inspect wiring for loose connections or corrosion

  • Check throttle operation for smooth return

  • Test kill switch, ignition, and lights

Brakes & Drivetrain

  • Inspect brake pads, rotors, and lines

  • Bleed brakes if the lever or pedal feels soft

  • Check chain or belt for wear and proper tension

  • Lubricate chain and inspect sprockets

  • Inspect clutch operation and cable or hydraulic system

Suspension & Chassis

  • Check suspension settings and sag

  • Inspect fork seals and shock for leaks

  • Tighten critical bolts and fasteners to spec

  • Inspect frame, subframe, and skid plates for cracks or damage

Tires & Wheels

  • Inspect tires for wear, cracking, or dry rot

  • Set tire pressure based on terrain and conditions

  • Check wheel bearings and spokes or lug nuts

Final Prep

  • Update numbers, graphics, and safety gear

  • Pack spare parts, fluids, and tools

  • Do a short shakedown ride to confirm everything feels right

A solid preseason check means fewer surprises, better performance, and more time doing what matters: riding and racing. Take the time now, stay cool, and start the season with confidence.
